1 NAME Jonathon /Whitten/ 1805

Here is the file from Roy T. Marshall who is related by  Marriage to Anna Belle Whitten
this is his theory as to the parentage of Jonathan, then I will try and give you mine,

1. Jonathan A, Whitten Born Circa 1805, in Laurens County, SC.  Died Circa 1845 in Fayette Co, IL. Occupation---Farmer.

We have not been entirely sucessful in tracing Johnathan  Whitten back to his parents. We have narrowed the field to two sets of circumstances or theories, either of which would seem to fit our  Jonathan. We will submit the facts we have along with our own analysis in  the hopes someone else can provide evidence as to the parents of Jonathan
Whitten. We know from the records of Young and Parker County Texas as the  Write-up about Anson E.P., that the mother of the below listed children,
Anson E. P.,
Robert Chasteen,
Phillip Easton, and
William C, Whitten,

first married a "Hinds" and then second to Jonathan Whitten, and also she  came to Texas from Moultrie County, Ilinois.
From the reference Counties of Christian and Trigg Kentucky, , by  Perrom, {pg 300 } we find the following statement. About the year 1800 there was quite an influx from Georgia, Virginia, and the Carolina's  into the counties. Among others were William Warren, Gideon Tighlman, a  batchlor, Ezekiel Wood, Thomas and James Vaughn, and William Morrow, a
brother-inlaw of the Vaughn's. Wood was a  Saddler. We have not found the place or location he moved from.nor do we know the name of his wife. He  had a daughter born in 1808, in Christian Co,Ky as indicated by the
following Census records.

We feel certain this daughter was the "Henrietta" who later became the mother of the Whitten children, From the Wood-Woods Family.
Magazine Volume 111, 1975 [pg 121] we find a list of Christian County, Kentucky Marriages, 1797-1850 and 1851-1900, plublished by Cordelia C.  Gary. Among this  list is the marriage of Henrietta Wood to John Hinds,  October 12, 1826, by John Spurlin, J.P.. Ezekiel Wood Bondsman. Recorded Marriage Book 7, [ pg 344] Christian County, Ky.

John Hinds and his wife Henrietta, along with her father  Ezekiel Wood moved to Fayette Co, IL soon after John and Henrietta were  married  the 1850 census records indicate that both their older children  were born in IL. We find them in the 1830 census as follows.

John Hinds           1830 Census, Fayette County, Illinois [  pg 246 ]

             0-5          5-10          10-15           15-20     20-30       30-40       40-50      50-60    60+

Female    0             0                 0                  0           1              0              0             0          0

Ezekiel Wood      1830 Census, Fayette County, Illinois   [  pg 232 ]

Male       1              1                 1                  1        1               0              1            0           0

Female   0              0                 0                  1        0               0              1            0           0

Notice that the 1830 census for Fayette Co, Illinois list 2 male children for John an Henrietta Hinds. The 1850 Census { See Anson's  write up } list Franklin Hines age 22, G.W.  Hines age  21. The name is spelled both ways in different census records. Sometime before 1835, probably in 1834, John Hinds died leaving Henrietta with two  or more small children.

At this point we should go back and pick up Jonathan Whitten at the time of his marriage in Wilson County, Tenn. The Book Marriages of Wilson County Tennessee, by Whitley, { pg 95 }
lists Jonathan Whitten married Mary Mount 3rd of September 1828, by Williamson Williams J.P. and  J. Powers BM. We know that Jonathan and Mary did not leave Wilson Co,  before 1830, because Martin H. Whitten of Fayette Co, IL[ son of Jonathan and Mary { Mount } Whitten. was born in Wilson Co, Tenn.

The book  "  WHITTEN AND ALLIED FAMILIES, Second Edition by Virginia Wood Alexander and William C. Whitten Jr. plublished in 1984 [ pg 227 ]
states that from the files of Mrs J Adley Davidson he was the son of John and Mary [ Mount ] Whitten, note by Virginia Wood Alexander, Jonathan Whitten married Mary Mount in Wilson County, Tenn on 3rd of Sept 1828 therefore they must have been the parents of Martin H. so he was likely born in Wilson Co, Tenn.

We next  find Jonathan in Fayette County, Illinois when he and Henrietta Hinds were married. Apparently his Wife, Mary died before 1835 leaving him with one or more small children. Just how Jonathan and  Henrietta met is not known, but as so often happened in those days, when a married person died leaving small children, the spouse soon afterward
married someone else. which was probably due to economic necessity, anyway Jonathan Whitten and Henrietta Hinds were married April 01, 1835  by Issac Sidwell, MG,
recorded in Marriage Record Book old A[ pg 9  ]  Fayette Co, Ilinois.

We are lucky to have available an Illinois State Census, taken in 1835, just a short time after Jonathan and Henrietta were  married. We know it was after the marriage because of the number of children listed in the household.

Ezekiel Wood,      1835   State Census, Fayette County,  Illinois

             0-10          10-20           20-30          30-40        40-50          50-60

Male       1                 2                  2                 0      0                 1

Female    0                 0                  1                 0       00
[Note Ezekiels  wife must have died before 1835

Jonathan Whitten      1835 State Census, Fayette County,  Illinois

             0-10          10-20          20-30            30-40        40-50          50-60

Male       4                 0                 1                   0           0                 0

Female   3                 0                 1                   0           0                 0

We note that Jonathan and Henrietta have seven children in  their household. In 1830, Henrietta's two boys Franklin and G. W. and Jonathan had one boy named Martin, this leaves 4 children born between 1830 and 1835 that either could belong to Jonathan or Henrietta or both,  We have no knowledge of the names of these children or what happened to them, Martin Whitten, son of Jonathan, resided in the household of Easton Whitten, who raised him, We do not know why Martin did not live with his Dad, maybe he was resentful of his fathers second marriage or maybe he could not get along with Henrietta, his step-mother,
From Fayette Facts Vol 111 No 2, 1944, [ pg 31 ]
Children of Easton  Whitten and Wilmouth Johnson,
Martin H. Whiten born Dec 29, 1830, Died July 2, 1894 buried Hurricane Cemetery married Clarissa Williams, lived in Fayette Co, IL. { Note by Mr Sanders ] he is not a son but a cousin or an orphan inasmuch as he was reared as a son and is listed as a member of the family.

Five years later we find Jonathan listed in the 1840 Census

Jonthan Witon, [ Note the spelling of the last name ]  1840 Census Fayette Co, West Div

            0-5          5-10          10-15          15-20      20-30          30-40          40-50          50-60

Male      1             0                 1                 0          1                 1                 1                 0         1

Female  1             0                 0                 0         1                 0                 0                 0         0

As we stated before, we did not find Jonathan and Henrietta in the 1850 Census however we know that Henrietta purchased land after 1850 and sold it in 1856 just prior to moving to Young County, Texas. We assume therefore that  Jonathan died probably before 1850. [ Note see the write-up about "Anson E.P. Whitten.

Jonathan, his father in-law Ezekiel Wood and several other Woods who were probably sons of Ezekiel, were mentioned quite often in the records of Fayette Co, Il.  [ see footnote section for a list of these references } We find the names  Chastain Wood, Grandison C. Wood, Anson Wood, and Hiriam Wood, usually these names were mentioned in conjuction with Ezekiel Wood or Jonathan Whitten or Both. We find these same names used by Henrietta [ Wood ] "Hines" ] Whitten as she named her own children. We wonder if her oldest son Anson E. P.  was named after her brother Anson, and her father Ezekiel thus Anson Ezekiel  P. Whitten. [ Note this is Mr Marshall's theory, now I will give you mine or another possibilty, The  E, in Anson's name could also stand for Easton, the man who raised Martin, the P. in his name could stand for Phillip, who would
be Jonathan's father, her second son she named Robert, which Jonathan had a brother named Robert, and I believe that was Jonathan's father's name, just a little food for thought until it can be proven,]

Now we go back to the theory of Mr Marshall.  Henrietta named her second son Robert Chasteen which came from the Whitten side and after her brother Chastain Wood on her side of the family. Her next son Phillip Easton was probably
named after  Whitten's, as both are Whitten names, also Henrietta's oldest son Grandison C. Hinds, must have been named after her brother Grandison C. Wood.

Listed in Fayette County in the middle of the 1840's were
Easton Whitten, Austin Whitten, Thomas Whitten, Levi Whitten, Elisha Whitten, and Harry Whitton. We are not sure if Harry is related, however we feel certain that the others were very closely related, and were also related to Jonathan Whitten.

We are now ready for the question, Who were the parents of  Jonathan Whitten? As stated before in the beginning, their are at least two or three good possibilities, First we will consider the Jonathan Whitten listed on page 436 of the book " Whitten and Allied Families" Second Edition, by Virginia Wood Alexander and William C. Whitten Jr.
Bill Whitten in his book [ Pg's 433-437] gives information about Phillip Whitten "The Younger" The son of Robert Whitten of Newberry, Laurens Co, South Carolina Phillips Bible record gives his birth as Sept 13, 1776, died Nov 3, 1858. He married Delilah Cain born Feb 9, 1777, died  Jan 8, 1835. They had seven children, one son named Robert born Oct 1, 1800 and
another son named Jonathan born Dec 6, 1805, it is this Jonathan we think might have married Henrietta [ Wood ] Hines in Fayette County, IL. The  Whitten book does not have any information on this Jonathan, Bill Whitten  say's in his book this Jonathan just seemed to vanish, we always assumed he died young, although the Bible does not list his death. We consider
this Jonathan a likely prospect for the following reasons.

1. He was the right age to be the father of the Whitten Children.
       2. The names Robert and Phillip were both used by Henrietta when  giving names to her children.
       3. Since there was no information found on him in the southern  states then perhaps he did move to Illinois.
       4. The Census records for two of Jonathans Children stated their  father was  born in South Carolina, however his  son  Anson E.P. Whitten  gave his fathers state of birth as Georgia.
5. As stated above Jonathan married Mary Mount of Wilson County, Tennesse on September 3, 1828, Apparently he was residing with Robert Whitten Jr or with an  older Jonathan Whitten in the 1830 Census, [ Note later when the 1830 census is listed there are no male or female that matches them living with either.] now back to Mr Marshall's theory,  We
have information listed below, which proves that Robert Whitten Jr. and his father Robert Whitten Sr. were in Newton and Walton counties in 1827. This is the same general area where Philip Whitten and his family were
residing at about the same time, thus it is very possible that Jonathan son of Phillip traveled to Wilson Co, Tenn with Robert Whitten  and there met Mary Mount and married her.

From Bill Whitten's book , pg 14, we quote " In Meriwither County, Greenville, Ga, office of the Clerk of Court, Deed Bk A. pg 91,  we find on 23 April 1827   Robert Whitten of Hardin County, Tenn selling to Robert Whitten Sr of Wilson Co, Tenn 2021/2 acres in th 7th district lot #68 in the 3rd section of Troup County on Flat Shoals Creek, for  NC $200.00 land granted to myself 20th of April 1827. This deed is headed  "Newton County, Ga. A witness who made his mark was Levi Whitten, and the deed was recorded Nov 13, 1828, This is almost surely land granted in the land lottery of 1827. and Robert Whitten Jr. sells it 3 days later to his Father. Not long thereafter Troup was split to provide for Meriwether Co, to come into existence. At the time the deed was made all three parties must have been residents of Newton County, or possibly the adjoining county Walton. The Levi Whitten is surely the one from Union County, S.C.  who has moved down into Walton and Newton Counties about 1822, one would  be a guess that the 2 Roberts were related to  him. but that would only be a guess. Also at the same courthouse, Deed Bk, A, pg 15, just one week
later, 30th of April 1827, we find a Deed Headed "Walton County, Ga" in which the lucky buyer above, Robert Whitten of Wilson Co, Tenn sells to James Blasingame of Walton County, Ga for $200.00 the same 2021/2 acres  of land in the 7th Dist of Troup County lot #68 in row 3 section of Troup County, Surveyed 8th of Jan 1827 by William Williamson, Robert Whitten made his mark, deed recorded 20th of March 1828. This strongly suggest that these two Robert Whitten's are the same ones who were in Columbia County, Ga in 1802. It was probably the elder who was a fortunate drawer of land in the 1820 land lottery, receiving it in 1822, and then Robert Jr receiving land in the 1827 land lottery in Troup County, Now they have both moved to Tennessee, although to different counties. End of Quote.

Robert Whitten Sr, and Robert Whitten Jr. were listed in  the 1830 Census for Wilson Co, Tenn, also a Robert Whitten was listed in the 1820 Census for Wilson County, and there was a Robert Whitton listed in the Wilson County census as early as 1812, when he acted a Bondsman for the marriage of William Mount and Mary Jones.

Robert Whitten Sr. of Wilson County in 1830 was born between 1770-1780, so he could not have been the Robert Whitton Sr, living in Columbia County, Ga in 1802, because this Robeert Whitton [ Of Columbia ] witnessed a will in Richmond County, Ga in 1781 for Alexander Fraser as quoted above from Bill Whitten's book. Columbia County was
formed out of Richmond County in 1790. So most likely Robert Whitton Sr. did not move when the county lines changed. We are of the opnion however that Robert Whitten Jr. , of Columbia County, Ga in 1802 is very likely  the same person as Robert Whitten Sr.  of Wilson County, Tenn. Robert Whitten Jr. of { Hardin Co, Tn}does not appear on the 1830 Census for Hardin County, Tenn, therefore because he sold land to Robert Whitten of Wilson County, Tenn, we feel it safe to assume that Robert Sr. of Wilson County was the father  of Robert Jr. of Wilson Co.

Now we go back to Phillip Whitten "The Younger" the three sons of Phillip were

Robert born October 1st 1800,
Littleton born March 7th 1802 and
Jonathan born Dec 6th 1805,

again we quote from Bill Whitten's book [ pg 437 ] "from the Georgia Archives we find Robert Whitten, Capt of Walton County, Ga Militia  1822-1823 and Littleton Whitten, Lieut of Walton County, Ga Militia 1822-1823. It is clear that  these are the 2 oldest sons of Phillip Whitten[ See Bible record above it strongly appears that Phillip and family must have moved about 1821 from Union County, SC. to the vicinity of Walton County, Ga which is about 40  miles N.E. of Atlanta, according to him this places the Robert Whitten's of Wilson County, Tenn in the same area and about the same time period as Jonathan Whitten the  third son of Phillip Whitten the Younger. Bill does not give any additional information about Robert or Jonathan, sons of Phillip.

[ Note again my view, remember earlier that Phillip and his family have moved down to this general area, and that Robert Robert was a Captain in the Walton County, Militia in 1822-1823 then why could it not be this Robert who was the lucky land drawer, after all  Bill Whitten the Author of the book says he has no more information about this Robert after he was in the Militia.}

Now again we go back to Mr,. Marshall's theory, it is conceivable that Jonathan went with Robert Whitten Jr, son  of Robert Whitten Sr, of Wilson Co, Tenn, and when they returned to  Wilson County, and there met and married Mary Mount of Wilson Co, If this happened he and his bride probably resided with Robert Whitten Jr, as  Robert Whitten Jr. had a younger couple living with him in the 1830 Census. The above is based on purely circumstantial evidence, but it very easily could have occured just that way, now we will consider the alternate situation which seems to fit our Jonathan as well if not better than the above case.,

[ Again please note Mr Marshall's theory could not be accurate, if Jonathan was born in 1805, that would put him at 25 years of age when the 1830 census was taken, now Mary was born in 1807, and that would put her at 23 years of age when the census was taken, and there are no Males or Females living with either a Jonathan or Robert Whitten Jr. within that age group, so more research has to be done in this area.}

Now here again is what Mr Marshall has to say.

1: An examination of the 1830 Census for Wilson County, Tenn  provides the following.

          Henry Whitten
             0-5          5-10          10-20          20-30   30-40          40-50          50-60          60-70    70+

Males    2             1                 1                 0             1                 1                 0                 0          0

Females 1            2                 0                 0             0                 1                 0                 2          0

             Jonathan Whitten
           0-5          5-10          10-20          20-30         30-40          40-50          50-60          60-70     70+

Males     0             1                 2                 1           1                 1                 0                 0          0

Females 3            2                 0                 0            1                 1                 0                 0          0

            Robert Whitten JR.
             0-5          5-10          10-20          20-30        30-40          40-50          50-60          60-70     70+

Males       2             1                 2                 1           1                 1                 0                 0          0

Females   3            2                 0                 0            1                 1                 0                 0          0

Robert Whitten SR.
              0-5          5-10          10-20          20-30         30-40          40-50          50-60          60-70     70+

Males       2             5                 2                 0           0                 0                 0                 1          0

Females   0            1                 0                 0            0                 0                 1                 0          0

We can easily see from the above census records that Henry, Jonathan, and Robert Whitten were probably the sons of Robert Whitten Sr. The Jonathan Whitten listed in the Census was to  old to have been ours, that is the father of A.E.P. , Robert Chasteen, Phillip Easton, and  William C. Whitten, however he could be the father of our Jonathan,
notice that he had a younger couple living with him in the household,, Either one of these couples could be our Jonathan and his wife Mary Mount,{ note again from bob Whitten, Jonathan's and Mary's birth years do  match th age brackets of the Census,] again from Mr Marshall, usually  parents named one of their children after the father and since none of our Jonathan's  children were named Jonathan  that we know of and he did  have one son named Robert, We lean towards Robert Jr. as being the  father, after considering all the above we believe that our Jonathan
Whitten was the son of Robert Whitten Jr of Wilson Co, Tenn, and the grandson of Robert Whitten Sr. of Wilson County, Tenn and the Greatgrandson of Robert Whitten Sr, who was in Columbia Co, Ga in 1802. We may be entirely wrong about this , so we encourge any one interested  in this line of the Whitten family to continue researching until we can  be certain about our Whitten Ancestry, if anything is found please let us know.

Now I Bob Whitten will give you what I think,

We assume that Jonathan was born in 1805, and ended up in Tenn where he met and married Mary Mount,  I also believe that his father was named Phillip, even though Jonathan didn't name a son Jonathan as we know of, he did name a son Robert which could  be after his brother or his grandfather, which was Phillips fathers name, He also named a son Phillip Easton, the Easton could have been named for the man who raised Jonathan's son Martin, and
the Phillip could be after his father, as stated before alot more research need to be done on the parentage of Jonathan that is the key to solving alot of questions. I for one lean more towards Phillip as his father.
