Thomas J. Mercer was elected Captain in Company E, 42nd Georgia Infantry Regiment of the CSA (Harpers Guards of Newton County, Georgia). He enrolled in the Confederate Army as Captain on March 4, 1862. He was captured at Vicksburg, Mississippi on July 4, 1863, and paroled there July 7, 1863. Thomas was sick in a hospital in Atlanta on October 31, 1863. His brothers, James and William served in his company.
Listed as a farmer in 1860 Newton County census, with wife, Frances Caroline, and children James L., 11, Augustus L., 9, Levi A., 8, Thomas, 6, Elizabeth, 3, and Mary, 6 months.

"This company left Vicksburg, Miss. May 1, 1863. and marched to Warrenton, Miss. Left there May 2nd and marched two miles below Big Black River towards Port Gibson, Miss., thence to Baker's Creek, Miss., where we engaged the enemy May 16, 1863, Retreated and covered the retreat of the entire army to Big Black River that night. Marched back to Vicksburg, May 17, 1863. and went into the 'Rifle Pits' same night, remained there until the surrender, July 4, 1863. Left Vicksburg July 12, 1863. Marched to Enterprise by the 20th of July, a distance of one hundred and sixty five miles, with four days' rations. Left Enterprise July 22, 1863; arrived at Mobile, Ala., where we were furloughed for thirty days. Exchanged and reorganized at Decatur, Ga. and drew arms October 1, 1863. Took the field again in East Tennessee."

Mrs Bell Mercer Dies , Mrs Mercer's illness was of one week duration - survived by Husband and 3 children. Mrs Bell Mercer, the wife of Captain J.L. Mercer, died at her residence , 30 Johnson Ave, at 7 o'clock yesterday morning , after an illness of 1 week. Besides her husband, she is survived by three children - Whitfield Mercer, of this city ; Barton MERCER, of Washington DC ; and Mrs Charles C Mhan of Jasper Co Georgia. She has a host of friends in the city who will be grieved to learn of her death.

Mr Whitfield Mercer , formally of Atlanta has been transferred from the Navy Department at Pensacola , where he has been serving for the last 8 months to the War Department at Washington and is now making his home with Mr & Mrs Bartow Mercer at 1516 S. Street, Washington.
Mr Bartow Mercer formally of Atlanta has recently been made chief clerk of the Army War College at Washington where he has been serving for the past several years. Mr Mercer is the son of Captain J. L. Mercer of Atlanta and nephew of Hon . L. S. Livingston

The announcement of marriage of Mr. Whitfield L. Mercer of Washington DC to Miss Male Vest Walker , of Richmond VA, comes as a pleasant surprise to their many friends , not only not only in Richmond and Washington , But also in Atlanta the former home of Mr Mercer. The marriage which took place April 02 was solemnized at the home of the bride , and was a quiet one , only the immediate relatives and personal friends being present. Mrs. Mercer is the youngest daughter of Mrs. Mary Ellen Walker , of Richmond , and descended from a distinguished VA family . She is very widely and popularly known in Richmond having lived there all her life, and is also a cousin of Mrs. Ballard Blake and R. Mac Bullington of the firm of Holt & Bullington , Both of Richmond. Mrs. Mercer is a beautiful young woman of charming personality , and is the possessor of a rich contralto voice of rare sweetness and power which has often been heard in the church choirs of Richmond. Mr. Mercer is the son of Captain J. L. Mercer of Atlanta , and a nephew of congressman L. F. Livingston of Georgia . He was born and raised in Atlanta and has a host of friends here who will receive with much pleasure the news of his marriage. Immediately after the ceremony Mr & Mrs Mercer left Richmond for Washington DC and are making their home with Mr Mercers Brother and sister , Mr and Mrs. Bartow Mercer, 1230 Columbia Road.

This little lady has the distinction of being the great great niece of Mrs Martha Lumpkin Compton , for whom Atlanta was first named Marthersville , and who is a daughter of ex-Governor Wilson Lumpkin of Georgia Fame. And on her paternal side she is a great niece of Hon. L.F. Livingston of Georgia and grand daughter of Captain James L. Mercer of Atlanta.

CONFEDERATE GEORGIA TROOPS
42nd Regiment, Georgia Infantry
42nd Infantry Regiment was assembled at Camp McDonald, Georgia, in March, 1862, with men from Gwinnett, De Kalb, Newton, Walton, Fulton, and Calhoun counties. The regiment moved to Tennessee, then Mississippi where it was attached to General Barton's Brigade in the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. It fought at Chickasaw Bayou and Champion's Hill, and on July 4, 1863, was captured at Vicksburg. Exchanged and brigaded under General Stovall, the 42nd continued the fight in various battles from Missionary Ridge to Bentonville. In December, 1863, it contained 444 men and 394 arms, and in November, 1864, there were 345 present for duty. The regiment surrendered with the Army of Tennessee with 5 officers and 126 men. Its field officers were Colonel Robert J. Henderson, Lieutenant Colonels W.H. Hulsey and Robert F. Maddox, and Major Lovick P. Thomas.
