Notes for Shadrach Mercer:
[Mercers.FTW]
Shadrach Mercer was born in Craven County, North Carolina about 1740if not earlier. This i s based on the fact that he was a witness to adeed in Craven County, North Carolina on July 2 9, 1761. He would havebeen at least twenty-one years of age at that time for legal purposes. One thing which has hampered research on Shadrach is the relativescarcity of records from th e counties in which he either lived or hadbusiness dealings. several of these counties have s uffered fires in theircourthouses (Craven, Dobbs, Greene) and some records have been lost.
At the present time there is a break in the trail of Shadrach from1761 to 1767. Then he is found in Pitt county as a witness to a deed;Remember this would be about five years after Thomas Mercer (Shadrach'sfather) moved there. The deed states that "Sullivant sold land to thomas (Pitt County, North Carolina Deed Book D, p.105, 1768).
Shadrach also appears as a witness to deeds in Pitt County in 1776and again in 1787. T he 1776 reference states that "Thomas Mercer andwife Sarah sold land to William Vimes." Th e deed names Christopher andJacob Mercer as brothers of Thomas Mercer and places them in th e vicinityof the sale. The references also also states that part ofthis land was agrant tha t had belongedto Thomas Mercer, father of the above named men.The deed was witnessed by Shadr ach Mercer, William Brantley and Thomasmercer (Pitt county, North Carolina Deed Book F, p. 16 5 March 7, 1776).Because Shadrach witnessed this deed and the one in 1768 (precedingparagraph ) it is reasonable to think he was also a brother ofChristopher, Thomas Jr., and Jacob and th erefore a son of Thomas Mercerof Pitt county. Another strong piece of kinship evidence come s from the1780 tax list for Dobbs County. This shows that Shadrach, along withChristopher an d Thomas lived within a few houses of one another in thevicinity of Waltonsburg and Speight' s Bridge. This portion of Dobbscounty was later named Glasgow County. Shadroach voted for m embers ofthe State Legislature in Glasgow County in 1793. The name Glasgow waschanged to Gre ene County in 1797. all this changing of county names canbe very confusing. Probably Shadra ch and his family stayed in the samearea throughout all the changes.
Shadrach appears on the 1790 Dobbs County census but isnot on the1800 listing for any co unty in North Carolina. it is thought he died inDobbs (Greene) County, North Carolina betwe en 1797 and 1800. He had fourbrothers and one sister: Christopher, John, Jacob, Amos and Ab igale"Abie" who married a Bergeron in Dobbs County. Shadrach married RhodaPrice in North Car olina around 1777. She was born in North Carolina in1761 and died in Muhlenberg County, Kent ucky between 1830 and 1840. Theyhad nine children four sons and five daughters.
Shadrach Mercer gave land to Meadow Primitive Baptist Church on SR 303,Walstonburg, NC 10/31 /1789.
After the death of Shadrach Mercer his widow Rhoda (Price) Mercer and herchildren removed t o Madison County, Kentucky in 1800. Her eldest son theRev. Martin Mercer a Baptist ministe r was married at this time and didnot come to Kentucky until 1816. Stephen Vick her son-in-l aw, whomarried Susannah Mercer and his brother Isiah Vick, who later marriedRhoda Mercer cam e with her and lived in Madison County until shortlyafter 1815 at which time they moved to Mu hlenberg County, KY. Hosea,Silas, David, Rhoda and Elizabeth Mercer were small children whe n theycame.
Most of the family except Hosea had moved from Madison County until 1832at which time he als o moved to Muhlenberg County. He was a widower in1830 with thirteen children, six sons and s even daughters. He marriedRachel Groves in Muhlenberg county in 1835.[128771.ftw]

About 1800 the widow and children of Shadrack Mercer moved from GreeneCounty, North Carolin a to Madison County, Kentucky. Source ofinformation-D.A.R. Magazine Vol. #70 page 878.
She was married three times. Her second husband was John W. Folks andher third husband wa s Jephania Harrison.
Rhoda Price Mercer, the widow of Shadrack married the widower John W.Folks of Greene Co., NC . He is found there in the 1800 Census.
Rhoda and John Folks left NC some time after 1800 and settled inMadison Co., KY. Most o f Rhoda and Shadrack's children went with them.David Mercer appears on the 1810/11 tax list s in Madison County, Hoseaand Martin in 1813 and Silas in 1814. These dates coincide fairl y wellwith the sons reaching their 21st birthdays (the point at which they wereeligible to pa y taxes). Martin mercer is an exception. He apparentlylived for awhile in Tennessee befor e joining his mother in Madisoncounty.
Hosea Mercer remained in Madison county and appears on the 1820 and1830 census records t here. The remainder of the family moved toMuhlenberg county, KY. in late 1817 or early 1818 .
The children of Rhoda and Shadrach are proven by the followingdocuments. The first is f rom Muhlenberg County Court Minutes, Book 2A,p.336, July 1820:
"On motion of Isiah vick it is ordered that a dedimus be awarded to John S. Eaves and Ed mund Watkins, Esquires for purpose of taking theprivy examination of Rhody Vick and Susanna h Vick, heirs ofShadrach, deceased, to certain instruments of writing thereinexpressed a nd report thereof accordingly."
Book 2A, page 264 of the Muhlenberg County Court Minutes, dated1820, refers to a "repor t of a commission to take the acknowledgement ofDavid Mercer aand otheers from them to Davi d Sarborough...." Thisrelates to the following minutes taken from the same book, page 365,da ted October 2, 1820:
"Report of acknowledgement of a conveyance from Shadrach Mercer'sheirs to David Sarborou gh."
A final document is taken from Muhlenberg Co. Deed Book 6, p.277,dated March 4, 1826: " indenture between Rhoda Folks, part of the firstpart and Stephen Vick (her son-in-law) and he irs of Dorcas Moore, lateDorcas Mercer, Rhoda Vick, Elizabeth Martin, wife of Samuel Martin . Thesaid Rhoda Folks for love and Affection she bears her children andgrandsons convey titl e of her dower to 100 acres of land patented to JohnFolks, my late husband, also 1 sorrel mar e now in possession of my sonDavid Mercer-all to be equally divided among my children andgran dchildren-estate to be settled in fall."
Rhoda Mercer Folks completed the above settlement of her property priorto her third marriag e to Zephania Harrison in Muhlenberg Co. on March 30,1826 (Muhlenberg Co. Marriage Book #1, p .65, Certificate #764).
