I, too, am [apparently] a granddaughter many times removed of Thomas Mercer (b1648), by way of Joshua Mercer (b1773) and William Mercer (b1827), who was my grandfather's (Major Forest Mercer) father. Don Mercer's research shows William Mercer's siblings to include a James Mercer (b 1829) and a Joseph James Mercer (b 1837). A history of Little Elm, Texas, contains information about three Mercer boys--Jim, Joe, and Billy--who came from Georgia to Texas; because the history has errors I have been cautious about it; however, my own research has tracked William, James, and Joseph, with their families and their mother, Dorcas, from Georgia to Louisiana, and on to Texas (Dorcas apparently died in Louisiana). All records I have found, including local cemetery records, indicates that Joseph's name is not Joseph James Mercer, but Joseph Jackson Mercer.
I know I will need proof before you can change the information gathered by Don Mercer. I will attempt to obtain a death certificate or other hard information on the correct name of Joseph Jackson Mercer, and submit it for your review. Meanwhile, here are my notes on Joseph Jackson Mercer:
Begin notes:
Confederate Pension application filed Sept 17, 1900 by Mrs. E. W. Mercer, wife of J. J. Mercer shows the following military service: served in Capt. McCarthy's Co., Major McGaugh's Battalion, possibly 5th Georgia Regiment. Enlisted 1863 and served to end of war. Application was witnessed by J. L. Mercer and P. Poling. Interrogatories answered by M. H. Findley and Elizabeth L (Lizzie) Findley who lived at Grapevine, Tarrant County, TX, and swore to the facts contained in application.
J. J. and Eliza's graves are in Division A-20, IOOF Cemetery, Denton, TX: "Mercer" lettered on curb.
Note 2/19/04: source 1870 Ward 5, Carroll County, Louisiana census (online): Joseph Jackson Mercer shown as dry goods merchant. Besides children listed here born before by 1870, the following are shown in the house: Joseph F. Adams, age 14, born Georgia; and Darshus [sic] Adams, age 62, female, shown born N.C.
1850 Georgia census shows a David Adams, husband of Daishia Mercer Adams, who may be the mother of the three Mercer brothers (Joe, Jim, Billy), in 11th District(page 356). No image available. Houston, Muscogee and Talbot Counties, Georgia Marriages 1826-1852 (online) show a Darcus Mercer married to a David Adams on July 3, 1845 in Houston County, GA (other site indicates year was 1841).
1860 Houston County GA census shows a Daishia Adams, 50, widow, as head of household which contains a Josua Mercer, age 39, and wife and family, and a Joseph I. or J. Mercer, 23, who is almost certainly our Joseph Jackson Mercer, brother of William and James Mercer. Also shown in house is Wm. Parker, age 20, farm laborer.
End notes.
Some confusion about the age of Darcus/Dashia/Dorcus. Was she born in 1803, as Don Mercer has it, or 1810, as shown on the 1860 census? Is she the mother of Joshua, born 1821 according to 1860 census, or his stepmother? Also, she apparently had a child, Joseph F. Adams, by her marriage to David Adams, and if the 1870 Louisiana census is correct, would have been 48 years old when the child was born. Unlikely, but possible. Of interest only to other descendants of Joshua and Darcus, probably, but nice to know for the record.
Thanks for your time. Your charts and sites are wonderful. Every Mercer researcher should say thanks each day to you and to the great work by Don Mercer, who, as you said, gave us such a rich database from which to start or continue our own research.
