Sex: M
Title: Sr
Birth: 7 SEP 1780 in Abbeville Co, South Carolina 3
Death: 9 JUL 1851 in Butts Co, Georgia 3
Burial: Gilbert property, Fairfield, Butts Co, Georgia 3
Note:
[baskin_1601.FTW]
! Birth date also found as 9 Jul 1780, and year also found as 1785. Since his
father was supposedly living in Rowan County, NC until after the Revolutionary
War, James may have been born there instead of Abbeville County, SC.
! Soon after his marriage to Rosannah Baskin in South Carolina, they removed to
Morgan County, Georgia. Here he enlisted in the War of 1812. He was a
lieutenant in the 286th District, Morgan Co, GA (6 Aug 1812). He served in
Captain Thomas Coleman's Company (10 Nov 1813). They later moved to Butts Co,
Georgia, a little above the Asa Buttrill place. James W. Harkness, Sr's father
was believed to be a William or Robert and was in the Revolutionary War. The
following was found in the Baskin notes (included in the book, "A Family
Genealogy," by William Henry Beck, III): "Brother-in-law, Harkness, was a
member of 'The Rangers', Captain Bell's Company". James' daughter, Peggy
Harkness Gilbert, lived on a farm at Fairfield, not far from Jackson, Georgia,
where they had a family burial ground. Supposedly her father and mother are
buried at this site, but this had all been destroyed according to family
records.
! Two of his sons (Robert and James, Jr) were to serve in the capacities of
Butts County Sheriff and State Representative from Butts County.
