Prepared by: Mrs. Marcelle Clark Bridgeman 225 County Line Church Road, SW Milledgeville, GA 31061 1752 11/22/2000 There was a Joseph N. Dickson in HANCOCK CO., GA who was the son of John Barnett Dickson, b. Oct 10, 1780, prob. NC, d. 1858, TX, m. Sarah Hannah Nichold on Mar. 15, 1848. John was the son of Michael Dickson, Jr. b. 1748, NC, (Rev. War soldier) d. 1803 in Hancock Co., GA m. (1) Margaret Barnett in Jan. 1779. Margaret was d/o Hugh Barnett and Elizabeth Curry of NC. Children of John Barnett Dickson and perhaps his first wife, unknown, were: Lucy Dickson Henry Dickson Joseph N. Dickson Benjamin B. G. Dickson William N. "Buck" Dickson This Joseph N. Dickson may be of a generation earlier than the Joseph you have enquired about. I don't think he would have been born in 1877. I am sending you a GEDCOM on the above mentioned John Barnett Dickson. Check your email. If this is the family you're looking for contact me and I can send you more info. jhr Descendants of John Barnett Dickson Generation No. 1 1. JOHN BARNETT4 DICKSON (MICHAEL3, MICHAEL2, DICKSON1) was born October 10, 1780, and died 1858 in Smith County, Texas. He married SARAH HANNAH NICHOLS March 15, 1848. Notes for JOHN BARNETT DICKSON: Some family researchers record John's name as "John Bennet Dickson" not "John Barnett Dickson." However, Barnett makes more sense than Bennet, because the mother's maiden name was so often used as a son's middle name, so that's the name I will record. I have found no Bennets in this line. According to Bobby Stokes, researcher of Crawford County families, John Dickson had a wife, before Sarah Hanna Nichols, who was the mother of his children and it is not known whether he had children by Hanna. Other sources give the first wife's name as Martha. John Dickson moved from Hancock County, Georgia to Pulaski County and after marrying Hannah Nichols Bryant, moved to Texas. John Dickson gave power-of-attorney to his son Henry J. Dickson to sell his land in Bibb County when John and Hannah moved to Texas. John Dickson evidently died about 1858, probably in Texas, but his estate was settled in 1858 in Crawford County, Georgia. Data on the descendants of John Dickson comes from Bobby Stokes. Two of Bobby's own family connections were the Hamlins and the Tidwells who married into the Dickson family. The surname "Nichols" is a Sept of The Clan MacNichol. ************************ The 1850 Hancock County, Georgia census records a John Dickson, age 60, born in Georiga, Farmer with Real Estate worth $35,000. In his household were Sarah Dickson, age 54, born in Georgia; Quincy Dickson, age 20, born in Georgia; and John Redfearne, age 32, Overseer, born in South Carolina. This John's age is ten years too young, but his wife's name is Sarah. The 1850 Bibb County, Georgia census lists the following about another John Dickson: John Dickson, age 70, born in Georgia, farmer, real estate valued at $1100 with Hannah Dickson, age 45 and Sarah Bryant, age 30, also born in Georgia. This census was taken on 4 Octr. 1850 and John Dickson was born 10 October 1780, so the age of 70 would be correct for this John and he had a female in the household named Hannah - maybe the Sarah Hannah Nichols he had married in 1848 and took to Texas with him. Neither of these records may be the same John Dickson who married Sarah Hannah Nichols, but if Sarah was a second wife, it is possible she was much younger than John. And, this John lived in Bibb County where he may have owned property which was sold by his son after he moved to Texas. JRH ************************** The following statement is taken from the FTM Dickson GenForum as submitted Oct. 25, 1999 by Marcelle Bridgeman of Milledgeville, GA.: Military: John Dickson was elected 3d Lieutenant of the newly formed Hancock Co., GA militia. Will: John Dickson signed his will on June 11, 1829 and it was probated December 7, 1829 in Jones County, Georgia. The abstract mentions his wife, Martha: sons: John, Robert, Thomas, William, Benjamin, Barnett. daughters: Nancy, Mary, Sarah. grandchildren: heirs of his daughter Lucy, May Jane Dickson. The will was witnessed by his brothers Thomas and Benjamin Dickson. General: Named as son and heir in will of Michael Dickson. NOTE: This data differs greatly from the information above which was given to me by Bobby Stokes. Evidently there were two, or maybe three, John Dicksons, one who died in 1829 in Jones County, Georgia, one who was in Hancock County in 1850 and another who was in Bibb County in 1850. The latter is the John who probably moved to Texas and died there about 1858 whose estate was settled in Crawford County. It has been stated by other Dickson researchers that John Dickson, brother of Michael Dickson, Jr., was also in Hancock County. Perhaps it was this John, with wife Martha, who died in 1829. Also in conflict are the names of John Dickson's children. The ones listed on my family page were given to me by Bobby Stokes. The ones listed by Marcelle Bridgeman were: John, Robert, Thomas, William, Benjamin, Barnett, Nancy, Mary, Sarah, and Lucy. One of Bridgeman's souces is the book by Jeannette Holland Austin, Abstracts of Georgia Wills, Vol. 2, p. 55. I have found numerous errors by this author as relates to several other families so I am reluctant to use information from that source. jrh Notes for SARAH HANNAH NICHOLS: Sarah Hannah Nichols was John Dickson's second wife. She had been married previously also to John Bryant. Hannah had two children, Sarah Ann Bryant and John Arthur Bryant. John Dickson was appointed guardian of the Bryant children at a court session held July 13, 1838. When John Bryant died, Hannah and Authur were appointed administrators of his estate. The above information came to me from Bobby Stokes and the dates of the death of John Bryant and the marriage of Hannah and John Dickson are not clear to me. Children of JOHN DICKSON and SARAH NICHOLS are: 2. i. LUCY5 DICKSON. 3. ii. HENRY DICKSON. 4. iii. JOSEPH N. DICKSON. iv. BENJAMIN B. G.. DICKSON, m. //?// PETTY. 5. v. WILLIAM N. BUCK DICKSON. Generation No. 2 2. LUCY5 DICKSON (JOHN BARNETT4, MICHAEL3, MICHAEL2, DICKSON1) She married JAMES PARKER. Child of LUCY DICKSON and JAMES PARKER is: i. JAMES6 PARKER, d. Bibb County, Georgia; m. MARGARET AMANDA TIDWELL. Notes for JAMES PARKER: Much of the data on the ancestral line of James Parker came from Bobby Stokes of Lizella, Georgia whose connection to this family came through the Tidwell family. JRH Notes for MARGARET AMANDA TIDWELL: The Tidwell family was part of the family roots of Bobby Stokes of Lizella, Georgia who did much research on the families of Crawford and surrounding counties. JRH 3. HENRY5 DICKSON (JOHN BARNETT4, MICHAEL3, MICHAEL2, DICKSON1) He married SARAH BERND. Notes for HENRY DICKSON: The 1850 Bibb County, Georgia census records the following which is probably this Henry Dickson: Henry Dixon, age 34, born in Georgia, Blacksmith with property valued at $300. Sarah Dixson, age 29, born in Georgia; John Dixon, age 7; and Frances Dixon, age 1. Children of HENRY DICKSON and SARAH BERND are: i. JOHN6 DICKSON, b. Abt. 1843. 6. ii. FRANCES DICKSON, b. Abt. 1849. 7. iii. SARAH M. DICKSON, b. Aft. 1850. 4. JOSEPH N.5 DICKSON (JOHN BARNETT4, MICHAEL3, MICHAEL2, DICKSON1) He married ARTEMECIA MICHELE HAMLIN July 12, 1838. She was born 1818 in Jones County, Georgia, and died 1888 in Crawford County, Georgia. Notes for JOSEPH N. DICKSON: Joseph and his wife were ancestors of Bobby Stokes of Lizella, Georgia from whom much of the information on the Dickson family was obtained. JRH 9/14/98 Joseph Dickson served in Co. C., 59th Georgia Infantry as a private. He was captured at Cash Pond, Pennsylvania July 4, 1863. He died November 8, 1863 at the U. S. General Hospital, Pt. Lookout, Maryland. Notes for ARTEMECIA MICHELE HAMLIN: Artemecia Hamlin was a lateral ancestor of Bobby Stokes of Lizella, Georgia. Bobby succumbed to his battle with cancer on March 15, 2000 at the age of 66. He was a much valued friend and fellow genealogist. I appreciated his wit and humor and his sharp mind and phenomenal memory. Innumerable researchers with Crawford County ties have benefited from his enormous store of statistics and family history which he shared so generously. Bobby will be much missed by a vast number of friends and family. The following obituary is from the Sunday, March 19, 2000 issue ofTthe Macon Telegraph: BOBBY STOKES LIZELLA - Services for Bobby Frank Stokes will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Chapel of Hart's Mortuary, Macon, with burial in Andersonville National Cemetery in Sumter County. Stokes, 66, died Wednesday, March 15, 2000. Son of the Late Scholey E. "Tops" Stokes and Gladys Hamlin Stokes, he was an Army veteran. He was a registered genealogist and formerly worked at Robins Air Force Base. Survivors include his aunt, Dorothy Long, and several cousins. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Children of JOSEPH DICKSON and ARTEMECIA HAMLIN are: 8. i. THOMAS T.6 DICKSON. ii. JOHN DICKSON. BUCK5 DICKSON (JOHN BARNETT4, MICHAEL3, MICHAEL2, DICKSON1) He married SARAH AMANDA DICKSON 1844, daughter of BENJAMIN DICKSON and MARY TAYLOR. She was born 1819. Notes for WILLIAM N. BUCK DICKSON: Buck Dickson's father was John Dickson, Benjamin's brother. So, Amanda and Buck were first cousins. Buck was a Justice of the Peace in Bibb County, Georgia. Information from Bobby Stokes. jrh Notes for SARAH AMANDA DICKSON: Sarah Amanda Dickson was sister of Martha N. Dickson who married Elijah Eubanks. Children of WILLIAM DICKSON and SARAH DICKSON are: i. MARY ELIZABETH6 DICKSON, m. MILES EDWARD YOUNG. Notes for MARY ELIZABETH DICKSON: Maynard E. Young, a grandson of Miles and Mary Elizabeth Young, still lives in Woodstock, Georgia. Address: P.O. Box 987, Woodstock, GA 30188 ii. PATRICK HENRY DICKSON. iii. WILLIAM CURRY DICKSON. THOMAS T.6 DICKSON (JOSEPH N.5, JOHN BARNETT4, MICHAEL3, MICHAEL2, DICKSON1) He married JULIA FRANCES MCCARDLE. Notes for THOMAS T. DICKSON: Thomas T. Dickson probably enlisted in 1862 in Co. C., 59th Georgia Volunteers at Knoxville, Georgia and was discharged in 1865 in Virginia. In the Friday, June 4, 1909 issue of the Crawford County News is a list of "Soldiers Entitled under Act 1907 to Pension". On the list is one T. T. Dickson as described above. His service was witnessed by Job D. McGee whose name is also on the list. Thomas T. Dickson would have been the right age to have served during the War Between the States. Children of THOMAS DICKSON and JULIA MCCARDLE are: i. JOSEPH BENJAMIN7 DICKSON, m. (1) LIZZIE CAMILLA HARRELL; b. October 1889; m. (2) ELSIE CHAMPION. DICKSON b: 1821 NOTES by Dana Ware I'm a descendant of the John Dickson (10-10-1780 to 1-7-1867) buried in Smith County, Texas, who is also believed by many to be John Barnett Dickson the son of Michael Dickson, Jr. from Hancock Co., Georgia. I welcome any communication regarding the following information: While researching my Dickson genealogy I recently obtained some important records from the Smith Co., TX courthouse in regard to the John Dickson who died there in 1867. These facts I knew before finding the records: This John Dickson married his second wife, a widow, Mrs. Hannah Nichols Bryant in Bibb Co., GA on 3-15-1845. They are also recorded in the 1850 Bibb Co. census as John Dickson age 70, Hannah age 45 and Sarah Bryant age 30. They moved from Bibb Co., Georgia to Smith Co., Texas in 1858, and are listed in the Smith Co., TX census for 1860. Listed in chronological sequence are the documents I located filed in Smith Co., TX County Clerk office: 9-3-1860 The deed for the purchase of 250 acres by John Dickson on 1-18-1860 was filed and recorded. The deed for the purchase of 400 acres by James Dickson (nephew of John) on 12-13-1859 was also filed and recorded. *See Note 1 below. 10-16-1862 A deed was filed that had been originally filed in Bibb Co., GA on 10-23-1858, whereby John Dickson transferred ownership of 5 slaves to his wife Hannah Dickson "formerly Hannah Briant"[sic]. The document states John acquired ownership of the slaves through his marriage to Hannah. Apparently he was officially returning sole ownership to her. *See Note 2 and 3. 6-24-1864 A will signed by John Dickson [sic] on 3-20-1863 was filed and recorded. In the will Hannah is to inherit his property until her death, then the property is to go to his children (unnamed). I have not had the opportunity to transcribe the will, yet. 8-25-1873 A deed is filed whereby William Dickson, as agent for the "heirs of John Dickson," sells the Smith Co., TX land to H. R. (Henry Reese) Stembridge. *See Note 4. The deed records the heirs of John Dickson as Henry J. Dickson, Mary Ann Webb, James M. Parker, Thomas T. Dickson, Frances/Francis Dickson and William Dickson. (This is a list of heirs who participated in the sale of the land, but is not necessarily all the children born to John Dickson.) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Note 1: James Dickson was the son-in-law of Hannah Nichols Bryant Dickson. Hannah's daughter, Sarah Aletha Bryant Dickson, was apparently the reason for their move from Bibb Co., GA to Texas in 1858, due to Sarah's health. Family legend records that Sarah died of consumption near Shreveport and never made it to Texas. Sarah and James had two daughters, Mary Elizabeth and Eliza Jane Dickson. In the 1860 Smith Co. census the girls are recorded twice, first as living with their father, James Dickson and second as living in the household of John and Hannah Dickson, their grandparents. Note 2: There is a long narrative written by a descendant of Hannah Nichols Bryant Dickson that claims she freed all her slaves before leaving Georgia in 1858. The filing of this document in Smith Co., TX serves as proof that she brought these 5 slaves with her to Texas, and did not release ownership of them. The 1860 slave schedules for Smith Co. record that James Dickson owned 11 slaves and John Dickson owned 14. I'm assuming the reason the ownership of the slaves by Hannah is not recorded in the 1860 Slave schedules is because the deed showing her ownership was not filed in Smith Co. until 1862. Note 3: The narrative also claims that the Dicksons were devoted to and beloved by their black "servants". The statements seem to exaggerate the truth, however, I did discover that James Dickson, even after serving for the CSA, at the age of 58 was the only white person living as a farm laborer in the household of Thomas Taylor, a black family in the 1880 Smith Co. census. Note 4: Mary Ann Dickson is my ancestor; she married Bertis Alford Webb on December 11, 1839, in Bibb Co., Georgia. Lucy Dickson married James M. Parker in Bibb Co., GA on 12-16-1845. I don't understand why James Parker is listed as the heir instead of Lucy, the daughter of John Dickson. Henry Reese Stembridge married Sophronia Isabella Webb on July 16, 1863, in Crawford Co., Georgia. Sophronia Webb was the daughter of Bertis Alford Webb and Mary Ann Dickson, the daughter of John Dickson. In December of 1872, Bertis Alford Webb, his wife Mary, their children, including their grown and married children, and some grandchildren immigrated to Texas from Crawford Co., GA (which borders Bibb Co.). An account of their trip, told by J. W. Bryant, was published in the Dallas Morning News in 1932; the article was republished in the Smith Co. Chronicles in 1968. See also my posting on the Dickson forum #1792. Still, I have found nothing that proves this John Dickson is the John Barnett Dickson, who was the son of Michael Dickson, Jr. of Hancock Co., Georgia. I would appreciate any help with this matter. Diana Ware |
